Making the Work Behind the Work Visible

Making the Work Behind the Work Visible

It’s Teacher Appreciation Month, and like many parents, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people who show up for my kids every day, the teachers, specialists, support staff, school leaders, and so many others behind the scenes, not regularly thanked, who educate, nurture, and care for them in ways that are both visible and invisible.

The visible parts are easy to name: the lessons, the communication home, the milestones and progress. But what stays with me most is everything else, the extra time, emotional labor, constant adapting, and the thoughtfulness and care that make learning possible in the first place.

That idea, of the work behind the work, has also been front of mind at ESC.

As our team put the finishing touches on ESC’s FY25 Annual Report, (check it out!), I found myself reflecting not just on what we accomplished this year, but on everything that made that impact happen. The outcomes matter: the strengthened organizations, the clearer strategies, the increased capacity of our nonprofit partners. And the feedback we hear from clients about the practical wisdom, caring partnership, responsiveness, and curiosity that our volunteers bring is deeply meaningful.

Those outcomes are only possible because of an extraordinary amount of effort that often remains unseen.

It lives in the thousands of pro bono hours our volunteer consultants contribute, thoughtfully, and with deep commitment, to help nonprofits navigate complex challenges. It shows up in the dozens of experienced volunteers who step forward to lead consulting teams, guiding both the work and the people doing it. It’s present in the faculty and mentors who orient and support new volunteers, helping them translate their experience into effective, community-centered consulting. And it is sustained by the steady leadership of our Board of Directors, the dedication of our staff team, and the generosity of our supporters, who together make this work possible.

This is work that doesn’t always have a headline. It doesn’t always show up in a single metric or story. But it is the foundation for all of it.

And like the educators we recognize this month, it is work rooted in care, in commitment, and in a belief that investing in people and institutions matters.

So this is, simply, a note of gratitude, especially in this moment, as nonprofits face unprecedented pressures, and when it feels even more important to pause and name the people who make this work possible.

To the hundreds of ESC volunteer consultants who have partnered with nonprofits in recent years, thank you.

To ESC’s project leads who take on the additional responsibility of guiding teams and shaping engagements, thank you.

To the faculty and mentors who support the next generation of ESC volunteers, thank you.

To our Board, staff, and generous supporters, whose leadership and commitment sustain this work, thank you.

To our nonprofit partners who place their trust in us and invite us into their work, thank you.

And just as importantly, this is also a reminder to pause and notice the infrastructure behind any meaningful work. The people, systems, and acts of care that make outcomes possible are easy to overlook. At ESC and across the nonprofit sector, that invisible work is everywhere.

Shining a light on it matters, not only as an act of appreciation, but as a way of strengthening what makes impact possible in the first place.

We are proud of what we accomplish together. And we are equally grateful for all that goes into making our purpose possible.
