Dear ESC Community

Freedom of speech, expression, and assembly are fundamental rights that require our vigilant protection. In these times of grief and outrage, the nonprofit sector is playing a vital role in defending these rights and supporting historically marginalized communities, particularly immigrant communities as well as Black and brown communities who continue to be disproportionately affected by police violence.

While the actions of federal agents in Minneapolis have drawn urgent national attention, we know that our communities throughout New England have also been navigating their own longstanding challenges related to ICE activity – including in Massachusetts and, more recently, Maine. Last week, MA Governor Healey issued executive actions clarifying state policy regarding ICE presence in schools, hospitals, courthouses, and places of worship, underscoring how relevant these issues remain here at home.

In that spirit, we are offering guidance and materials produced by local leaders at the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits (MCN) and the Minnesota Council of Foundations (MCF). These resources include information on safety, legal rights, and organizational preparedness for nonprofits working with immigrant communities. Additionally, here are some tangible actions for allies outside of Minnesota, and some MA specific resources.

Here at ESC, we remain grounded in our mission and in the power of nonprofits showing up every day for their communities. We will continue to support that work and stand firmly for the just, inclusive future our communities deserve.
